Beethoven The Man And The Artist As Revealed In His Own Words Friedrich Kerst Henry Edward Krehbiel 9781161423693 Books

If I could rate this book, I’d give it a 5 like his 5th Symphony and I have been wanting this book for quite some time. Now that I bought it, I can’t really put it down. It shows great feelings and emotions based on how Beethoven was as a man and a composer. The only thing that seemed out of place was the Immortal Beloved. I don’t have the slightest clue on who she was or is. I’m determined to find out. A-must-read for all Beethoven fans out there who want to read his side of the story.

Beethoven The Man And The Artist As Revealed In His Own Words Friedrich Kerst Henry Edward Krehbiel 9781161423693 Books Reviews

This little book is nice to have for little snippets into the mind of Beethoven. There are several biographies of the great artist; but this little book provides Beethoven's writings on things like God, Nature, Art, etc. that give the reader things to consider. It's great to pick up for an inspiration, light reading, or even daily thought.
This is a wonderful book...with Beethoven's brief insights on everything to do with life...showing his humanity...and great sensitivity...and belief in freedom. It's wonderful to learn that he was not only a great composer but also a great human being.
This book was published in 1905 and is not a biography, but a compilation of 323 Beethoven quotes. After much thought the compiler chose to include a few quotations which Beethoven copied from books that he read. The reasoning is that if Beethoven wrote them down, the words must have made an impression (and there are not many of these and identified as such). The book is arranged under 13 subject headings (1) Concerning art (2) Love of nature (3) Concerning texts (4) On composing (5) On performing music (6) On his own works (7) On art and artists (8) Beethoven as critic (9) On education (10) On his own disposition and character (11) The sufferer (12) Worldly wisdom (13) God.

The compiler provides helpful overviews in 9 of the 13 chapters. The book has no index or bibliography.
I read this book many years ago in hardback and enjoyed it. In paperback the print is so small you need a magnifying glass.
Good, albeit short, read.
Very informative.
This book is an absolute must own/read for any Beethoven fan, musician or music historian interested in going a good bit deeper. From the book "Every form of pseudo or bastard art stirred him with hatred to the bottom of his soul; hence his furious onslaughts on mere virtuosity..." this and many other highly interesting insights supported by his own personal letters also in the book.

I also recommend two other Dover books, "Beethoven, As I Knew Him" and "Beethoven, Impressions by His Contemporaries".
If I could rate this book, I’d give it a 5 like his 5th Symphony and I have been wanting this book for quite some time. Now that I bought it, I can’t really put it down.
